Pirates Defeat Charles Wright Tarriers Decisively
Feb 13, 2009
by Charlie Pieterick
by Charlie Pieterick
Senior Chris Pieterick lays the ball up past the Charles Wright defenders.
When Charles Wright visited the Pirate Court during Senior Night, the Tarriers scored first on a little back door sneaker. But Vashon answered, then went ahead on a Wegner 3 to kick off a 9-2 run that gave Vashon a 12-8 first quarter lead. The Tarriers were crippled by early foul trouble. Opposing point guard, Eric Knowles, picked up his first foul 16 seconds into the game and his third foul 26 seconds into the second quarter.
Pirate John Gage, who had a game high 18 points, was scoreless in the first quarter but was a presence defensively and on the boards throughout the game. He opened his scoring with a pair of free throws early in the second, then began to efficiently mix in short turn-around jumpers, foul shots, and baseline drives to push the Pirate advantage. He also gave up his body in the period, standing in to take a hard charge from stocky Jordan Hand to force another Tarrier turnover.
Teammate Alex Wegner, who finished with 17 points, fed off a menu of fast break points, inside drives, 3-pointers, and foul shots to put up his numbers.
When Coach Sears pulled his seniors in the fourth quarter, the VHS underclassmen minus Gage, whose night’s work was accomplished, brought the Pirate ship skillfully to port for the 60-29 win.
Pirate Points vs. CWA: Gage 18, Wegner 17, Timm-Skove 9, Max Burnham 6, Chris Pieterick 5, Hoffman 2, Kyle Bakker 2, Holert 1, Weston, Jacobovitch, Kerns, Stoffer.
