February 16, 2008 - It's back to the drawing board for the Vashon Pirates Boys Basketball team. Vashon lost to Seattle Christian in the opening game of District Tournament Play.
The Vashon Pirate boys’ basketball team lost a close game to the Seattle Christian Warriors, 47-44 in the West Central District tournament last night.  The Warriors, a keen Nisqually League rival, leap-frogged the 2007-2008 League champion Pirates for top seed into the boys Northwest Bi-District tournament which starts next Wednesday.

The Pirates and Warriors battled toe-to-toe in the opening minutes of their game.  The Pirates had initial success getting the ball into their post player, John Gage, for scores. However, they repeatedly shot themselves in the foot with unforced turnovers.  This allowed the Warriors, on the back of scrappy rebounding, to break away on a 12-4 first quarter run.  Pirate Justin Calhoun finally staunched the hemorrhaging with a quick-release 3 pointer off an inbounds pass to bring the Pirates back to 15-19 as the quarter ended.

The Pirates could not gain traction during much of the second quarter, chasing a 5 point margin throughout.  Then, with 1:30 remaining, Gage stole the ball in the backcourt and went the distance to throw down a monster jam.  He followed that with a defensive stuff and got the Pirates within one point at the half, 25-26.

Costly turnovers in the 3rd quarter converted Pirate possessions to dross and allowed Seattle Christian to nudge the lead back to 5.  With amped up defensive intensity, the Pirates clawed their way back in the 4th period.  Glued to their SC counterparts, the Pirates contested every shot.  They forced several turnovers, including a steal by Chris Pieterick for 2 points which brought them within one point midway through the quarter.  The Pirates gained the lead a short time later but could not hold it.  Two late 3-pointers by Gage, including a 25 footer from way beyond the top of the arc kept Vashon close down the stretch in this heart-breaking loss.
Pirate Points:  Gage 22, Burnham 10, Calhoun 5, Charlie Hoffman 2, Pieterick 2, Alex Wegner 2, Odin Jacobovitch, Matt Kerns, Elias Weston.
