Ben Whitaker, 22, rises above a herd of Cowboys as the Pirates begin their rout of Chimacum.
This week the Pirates basketball team played two must win games. They started the week off with a dominant win over the Chimicum Cowboys, then a road loss against a very good Eatonville team.

On Tuesday January 29th Chimicum travelled to Vashon to face the Pirates. In their first meeting the Pirates won the game handedly.

To start off the game the Pirates were dominant on defense only allowing 6 points in the first quarter. Senior Ben Whitaker displayed the Pirates defense with great block in the paint, while freshman Sam Yates added to the offense with a first quarter trey. At the end of the first period the Pirates led 13-6.

The second quarter was dead even with both teams scoring 12 points. The pirates ran their offense with efficiency while Chimicum didn’t seem to have an offensive scheme. At the half the score read 25-18 Pirates.

As play resumed the Pirates came out faster, stronger and better than the Cowboys. As the game came closer to the final buzzer ringing the Pirates continued to pull away and establish themselves as the better team. Sophomore Ian Stewart tied a career high with 14 points and Sophomore Jesse Norton led the Pirates in scoring with 26. The final score was 57- 36 Pirates.

On Saturday February 2nd in wake of the tragic death of classmate Ryan Krug the Pirates made the long trip to Eatonville to face a tough team in a must win situation. Norton started the Pirates off with a three, but by that time Eatonville had jumped out to an early lead. At the end of the first quarter the Pirates were down 12-8.

In the second quarter Eatonville started to pull away. The Pirates couldn’t get anything going on offense and Eatonville was extremely physical. The referees rarely called fouls on the cruisers even when Sam Yates was knocked to the ground while attempting a three there was no call. At the end of the half Eatonville led 31-18.

During this game I witnessed one of the most distasteful things I have ever seen in sports. Several fans in the Eatonville student section were yelling gay slurs at the Pirates players, they were mainly focused at Ben Whitaker and Jessie Norton. That is crossing the line. Yelling attempting to rattle the opposing players is one thing and part of sports, but yelling “faggot” and “homo” at a high school player is not an acceptable action.

As play continued in the second half it was the same story for the Pirates. Eatonville was outplaying the Pirates at both ends of the court. There was a scary moment in the third quarter when Senior Matt Swope got entangled with a Cruiser player attempting to grab a rebound, both players crashed to the floor and the Eatonville player grasped his knee in agony. After several minutes of medical attention the player was helped to the Eatonville bench and did not return to play. Sam Yates and Jesse Norton both led the Pirates in scoring with 8 points each. The final score read Eatonville 55, Pirates 34.
