Alex Wegner hit Hamzah Griffin right under the hoop for a lay-in on Vashon’s second possession of the basketball game against the Orting Cardinals on Friday night for the first points in a 46-34 league win . In the next possession, on a in-bound play, Tyler Stoffer dropped the ball into Ben Whitaker’s hands in the corner who swished in it for a 3-pointer and the Pirates never looked back. By the end of the first quarter, they had a 15-4 lead.

Although smaller than the Vashon team (the tallest Cardinal being 6-foot), Orting played tough and aggressively and Vashon was in double-bonus free throw shooting by midway through the second quarter. The Orting coach followed an unusual substitution pattern, pulling all five players out and replacing them every few minutes. But the Pirate defense stayed focused and held a 24-11 lead going into the locker room at the half.

By the end of the third quarter, the Pirates had increased their lead by three and ended it at 36-20. The game continued to be a physical battle with both teams being in the double bonus in the fourth quarter. The Pirates prevailed to bring home the win with an ending score of 46-34.
